Temporary weekend closure on Jakes Gerwel Drive for roadworks

19 June 2026

The City of Cape Town’s Urban Mobility Directorate would like to advise residents and road users of a temporary road closure associated with the ongoing rehabilitation of Jakes Gerwel Drive between Viking Way and Voortrekker Road. The planned night work will take place on the northbound trunk road from Denneboom Avenue merging onto Jakes Gerwel Drive on the evening of Saturday, 20 June 2026. This section of road will remain closed throughout the day on Sunday, 21 June 2026 and is scheduled to reopen at 20:00 on Sunday evening.

‘As many residents will know, work to rehabilitate Jakes Gerwel Drive is currently under way as part of the City's efforts to improve this important route and keep Cape Town moving. To complete the next phase of the project, a temporary road closure will be in place following Saturday night's construction activities. The closure will remain in effect throughout Sunday, 21 June 2026, to allow the newly completed road surface sufficient time to cure properly. While no construction work will take place on Sunday, we ask motorists to make use of the alternative routes provided and thank residents for their patience and understanding while these important improvements are carried out,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.

Alternative routes:

  • Alternative route from GrandWest Casino to Jakes Gerwel North: will be via Denneboom Avenue, Sipres Ave and Viking Way to Jakes Gerwel Drive.
  • Alternative route from Thornton to Jakes Gerwel North: will be via traffic circle on Denneboom Avenue and Sipres Avenue to Jakes Gerwel Drive.

Motorists are encouraged to plan their journeys accordingly and make use of the alternative routes and detours that will be in place.

The City apologises for any inconvenience and thanks residents and road users for their patience and cooperation as these important road infrastructure upgrades continue.
